Comparing the Lightpro Shark 3000D vs the Aputure Light Storm 300D

Recently, we have received a lot of inquiries about the Aputure Light Storm range of LEDs. Being extremely powerful, compact and versatile with its ability to be modified, they give you a plethora of creative possibilities. However, due to their immense popularity, they are incredibly difficult to get a hold of quickly, and customers are usually left to wait months before their light arrives. In saying this, what if I told you there is a better, more versatile light out there? Introducing the Lightpro Shark 3000D. Here are just a few reasons why we believe that the Lightpro Shark 3000D matches up to, or could even be considered better than the Aputure Lightstorm 300D II.

Here at Dragon Image, we understand that it’s important to give customers the most up-to-date technical expertise when it comes to lighting. It’s important to ensure that we are giving you the right knowledge to help you find the right light for your job. It’s also important to note that manufacturers test their lights under different conditions - whether it be from different distances or at different brightnesses - and this can create discrepancy between the readings of different lights. That’s why we test all of our lights under the same conditions (you can see all of our videos online performing these tests) - 1m distance, at full brightness - to ensure that the information we’re giving you is completely accurate, and allowing customers to compare the lights at home before coming in to purchase.

The Spectrometer doesn't lie!

The Lightpro Shark has both CRI and TLCI readings of 96+, meaning it is extremely colour accurate.  While the Aputure Lightstorm also has extremely high colour accuracy ratings of 96+ as well, this information is provided on their website without much indication as to the conditions that they take those measurements. You can rest assured knowing that all of the Lightpro colour reading tests are conducted in consistent conditions, as we provide videos of each of the tests taking place.

On face value, these lights are almost inseparable. They’re both 300W LED lights - which is roughly the equivalent of a traditional 2.5kW Halogen or a 575W HMI -, they both share similarly sleek designs with internal cooling and they both have Bowens Mount fittings. However, one key difference is the fact that the Lightpro Shark 3000D has a brighter output while consuming less battery power than its counterpart. Not to mention that the Shark is about $500 cheaper than the Aputure 300D!

That’s not to say the light is any worse in build or quality than its Aputure counterpart at all, but in fact a big argument as to why you should consider the Lightpro Shark over the Aputure Lightstorm. Backed with over 30 years of lighting experience, Lightpro has it all down pat, compared to Aputure only having 5 years of experience. This was evident only a couple of years ago, where they had to recall their Light Dome Mini for the Lightstorm lights, due to some colour accuracy faults requiring extra tweaking.

This reaffirms the Aputure 300D as a consumer-grade light - which is still great for general filmmaking. However, Lightpro has gone the extra mile to ensure that the Shark 3000D is at a professional-grade standard. You only need to look at the fact that we have sold over 50 units to Channel 7, a further 25 units to the ABC, as well as multiple units to professional photography companies such as Big Box Cars.
