The much-anticipated launch of the EOS R5 delivers Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera to wear the iconic 5-series name. A series adored by both enthusiast and professional photographers alike thanks to its heritage of pushing the boundaries of creative image solutions.

Canon has broken new ground in delivering the EOS R5 - a camera that owns the 5 series name proudly. Let’s take a closer look at the industry-leading innovation that raises the bar in more ways than one.

8K Movies

The Canon EOS R5 is the world’s first interchangeable-lens digital camera to offer 8K video!

8K video provides up to four times the resolution of 4K footage. The R5 gives a greater range of flexibility to post-processing workflows thanks to the ability to crop the frame and still retain full 4K resolution.  With the level of detail and resolution in 8K video, you can extract approximately 33-megapixel still images from within the footage. This again expands the opportunities for creative applications.

As the R5 effortlessly demonstrates, 8K video offers much more than just higher resolution.

Canon’s most advanced autofocus system, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II,  is available in all 8K video modes. As a result, you get outstanding resolution quality along with the benefits of Canon’s advanced subject recognition and tracking. 8K video recording is using the full width of the sensor ensuring that there is no crop to your footage. Your wide-angle Canon RF lenses deliver true wide-angle content.

The Canon R5 also supports the ability to slow down and record 4K footage at 120p. This mode delivers smooth and crisp cinematic-quality content that also utilises the Dual Pixel CMOS AF II. Alternatively, you can capture and create dramatic timelapse footage in 8K, 4K or Full HD. Time-lapse post-production is made even more accessible due to the built-in interval timer.

For the videographers, using the EOS R5 with cameras such as the Canon EOS Cinema range is a perfect match. The R5 includes Canon Log to make colour matching and post-production flows simpler and more consistent than ever before.

Image Stabilisation

In a Canon first, the EOS R5 and EOS R6 both feature 5-axis In Body Image Stabilisation.

You can make the most of an image stabilised kit even with RF lenses that do not have their own built-in IBIS. A great example is the incredible Canon RF 28-70 f/2 L series lens that, for the first time, can be used with image stabilisation.

Combining select Canon RF lenses equipped with lens-based Image Stabilisation with the R5 you achieve optimal control and a reduction of camera shake.

For example, combining that EOS R5 (or the EOS R6) with the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM delivers the World’s Best Image Stabilisation up to 8 shutter speed steps.

For comparison, shooting with a shutter speed of around 2 seconds will deliver results just as share as shooting at around 1/100 or 1/125 second.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II

EOS R5 and EOS R6 both include Canon’s new Dual Pixel CMOS AF II autofocus system.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF was first introduced in 2013 with the EOS 70D and progressed massively since then with new features added to the original system. With the scale of innovation and advancements built in to the EOS R5 and EOS R6 autofocus system vs previous models, Canon has adopted the Dual Pixel CMOS AF II naming for the first time. So let’s look at some of the new features.

Up to 100% x 100% frame coverage meaning that you can track subjects to every corner of the frame. This is the first camera from Canon to offer complete 100% frame coverage.

In total, there are up to 1053 autofocus zones which the camera can select automatically, or if you want to choose the focus point yourself there are up to 5940 user selectable AF point positions.

When paired with RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, the EOS R5 can achieve autofocus in just 0.05 seconds, making autofocus with this combination one of the fastest in the world of full frame cameras.

And, with the EOS R5 you can shoot continuously at up to 20 frames per second whilst maintaining full auto focus and auto exposure tracking, perfect for capturing the action.

Auto focus tracking has become a huge feature in recent years, and the EOS R5 is one of the most advanced cameras on the market in this respect, offering AF tracking of Human subjects with eye, face and head detect. If you are photographing animals such as dogs, cats or birds you also get eye, face and whole body detect – perfect for locking on to subjects that don’t always sit still or face the camera.

Finally when it comes to autofocus, the EOS R5 supports aperture settings as wide as f/22. This is really important when you want to shoot with telephoto lenses using teleconverters such as the new RF 1.4X and RF2x teleconverters which have just been announced.

High Speed, High Resolution, High Performance

EOS R5 is the ultimate hybrid with incredible stills and video performance, fast shooting speeds and advanced autofocus. This offers flexibility to shoot a huge variety of subjects from weddings and commercial, portraits to landscapes, sports and wildlife and a full range of motion productions.

The new 45MP full frame Canon CMOS sensor offers amazing resolution for large prints and the flexibility to crop in to your images.

Not only is there a new CMOS sensor, the R5 also features the new DiG!C X imaging processor which first appeared in the EOS-1D X Mark III just a few months ago. This processor is the key to unlocking many of the amazing new features that have never been seen before.

When it comes to speed, the EOS R5 can shoot continuously at up to 20 frames per second with an electronic shutter or 12 frames per second with mechanical shutter. The electronic shutter is great for situations where you need to shoot quietly without distracting your subject such as a press conference or at a golf game.

Another feature new to the 5 series is the ability to shoot HEIF files. HEIF stands for High Efficiency Image File format and it delivers a 10-bit compressed image file which is much higher quality with better colour reproduction than a traditional 8-bit jpg file. Due to more efficient compression HEIF files are roughly the same file size as their equivalent jpg files but you get the benefit of better image quality. Of course if you want to shoot in JPG or in RAW the EOS R5 can do that too.

EOS 5 Series Operability and Reliability

There are some incredible leaps in innovation contained inside the R5, but some things are better kept as they are. As soon as you pick it, the camera feels comfortable and familiar to EOS 5 series shooters. Its got that familiar intuitive layout and design.

Looking around the body there’s the door hiding the dual card slots. One is a CF express card to power some of the more advanced features like 8K recording and the other is an SD card for easy compatibility with previous models.

On the back of the camera we’ve got the multicontroller or AF joystick and the rear scroll wheel for familiar and intuitive control.

This electronic viewfinder is just beautiful, its nice and large at 0.5 inchs with an OLED screen that is 5.76 megapixels in resolution. Something else hidden in here are the purpose built EVF optics that Canon designs to make using the EVF much more enjoyable.

Also on the back we have something new for the EOS 5 series. The R5 is the first 5 series camera to include a vari-angle LCD screen which is great for shooting at different angles and also for packing away safely in your bag at the end of the day.

Finally at the bottom of the camera we have a new LP-E6NH battery which is longer life than the current LP-E6N battery. Great news though, all of your old LP-E6 batteries will still work in the R5, they just wont last quite as long at the new battery.
