Is the Ninja V or Ninja 5 worth all the hype?
The Atomos Ninja V is a 5.2” 4K 60p dynamic and a high-end compact HDMI monitor/external recorder that has a range of incredible functions, which can be applied to different technologies. AND it only weight 320g and is 2.5cm thick. It can work as a recorder for any of the DSLR cameras (HDMI) for recording extremely hard to film situations (like extreme sports).
Surprising sector in a different industry, it works well for gaming too!
Another known application of it is in the area of gaming, where it can act as a compact yet highly immersive screen for user’s gaming console like a PS4 or an Xbox One, and with the function of recording you can edit your footage and upload to your chosen social following platform like Youtube.
It can also be attached to a personal computer for the desktop use of its screen and a recorder, with ease. The execution of perfectly calibrated HDR graphics knows no bounds and it settles well with any of the consoles or a PC for recording and monitoring their content. Its incredible range of different capabilities gives Atomos a different feel for the user, as it possesses the technologies to adapt to various situations that may arise for the user.
The fantastic features that Ninja V possesses:
Atomos Ninja V surpasses the traditional use of an external recorder by merely adding additional capabilities that may or may not be available in other monitors or recorders.
It incorporates high dynamic range which allows you to see detail in both the shadows and the highlights of your composition. Some monitors do not have this feature, which means that if you are shooting a production and going based on the reference monitor, you could in fact be losing details in your shadow or the highlights of the scene which are so far gone that you are unable to bring them back in post.
Am I limited in the Edit Suite?
Ninja V is also able to share its recorded material and files via any Mac or a PC. Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro are able to use Ninja V footage for direct editing of the recordings that are saved in the external SSD.
Do I have to use a specific SSD / media card for recording?
The SSD (solid-state drive) that is installed in Ninja V (and is also backward compatible with other models from Atomos, this means you can use it with the Atomos Shogun or other Ninja models). You can use a 3rd party option, however Atomos, with the partners AngelBird and Sony, have developed a smaller physical size model that is 2 terabytes and called the Mini SSD. Users of the recorder can read and write their files on the fast speeds of 500MB/s.
Modularity is the central function:
Expansion of the Ninja V is another great feature of it. The expansion is completed through the Atomos’ Atom X Ethernet for increasing the connections of Ninja V by being able to use the legacy connections like the Ethernet. This improves scalability and the modularity, which is the main function of the external recorder.
How can I record sound?
The 3.5 mm Headphone jack allows you to record sound directly to the unit and most external recorders and mics have the ability to use 3.5mm jacks, or you can plug in directly from your camera via 3.5mm or HDMI.
The Firmware and the Price:
Another feature of Ninja V is its AtomOS, which provides an easy to navigate user interface, which is also grounded in simple design. You also have access to the histogram, false colour, focus peaking, pixel magnification, waveform, RGB, vectorscope, 8 channel audio level meters and the ability to load creative LUTs. It is a small package… but it packs a punch.
